How do I sign-up for audits?

Subscriptions are open from 1st August - 30th October each academic year. We use a cut off date to ensure that there is continuity for existing customers and to aid us with preparation for our Housing Fair, which is based on the number of properties a landlord subscribes. Landlords are able to opt-in for a biennial subscription at any point during the year.
Properties are charged at £45 based on a 1-5 bedroom property with an additional £2.50 fee per extra bedroom. For the purposes of pricing, a property comprises of one kitchen. Any additional kitchens will be charged as a separate property. Discounts are available for halls of residence over 100 bedrooms.
No. Unfortunately every penny we receive for property subscriptions is spent on conducting inspections and the administration that goes with it. Stall fees we take for Housing Fair are used solely for the marketing and running of the event.
We have two subscription types, an annual or a biennial subscription. An annual subscription will cover landlords from the date of payment until 1st September each year. Biennial subscriptions are optional and involve two years payment upfront.
What are the benefits of signing up to HullSTARS?
HullSTARS is a system which is endorsed and recommended as a reference tool by Hull University Union and the University of Hull to all of their members and students. By signing-up for audits you get the benefit of being able to reply to feedback posts and also benchmark your properties against the competition, allowing you to stand out from the crowd. Registered properties will receive detailed feedback and certification to show of the star rating, as well as additional scorings on StuRents adverts to help the properties appear higher on searches. Landlords who are registered to HullSTARS are eligible for the annual HullSTARS Awards, as well as being able to attend the Housing Fair (*subject to terms and conditions).
Following landlords feedback, we introduced the biennial subscription in 2014 to reduce administration and inconvenience to landlords. The biennial subscription involves full payment for both years in year one, and allows landlords to retain their audit rating over two years as opposed to one. The audit rating is then valid for two years, thus reducing inconvenience to tenants, reducing the administration of having to update your account each year, and offers a reduced re-inspection fee of £15.
I've already signed up but would like to opt-in for a biennial subscription, how do I do it?
That's great! Most landlords choose to opt-in once they're happy with their audit scores. To opt-in, you just need to give our office a call to let us know then pay for next year's subscription up front. Once your payment has come through, we'll send you a new certificate with the extended date and update the information online for you. It's as easy as that!
Although you have tenants signed up for next year, you should not take it for granted that you will have tenants the year after. HUU’s members are being encouraged to look for rated properties over unrated ones. Signing up now, alongside giving you an audit rating (which will be promoted as being better than not having one) will provide you with the audit report which will allow you to make required improvements to your audit score for when you next need to advertise for new tenants.
How does HullSTARS differ to the previous system, ‘The Scheme’?
HullSTARS audits properties not landlords, whereas The Scheme accredited landlords by auditing only 10% of their portfolio (with a minimum of one). Although students can give a feedback rating for the landlord, this forms a small part of the overall structure of the feedback system.
Not strictly speaking. You will have access to your property's HullSTARS page which you can include a description, photographs and your contact details, but no details on pricing or offers. Free advertising can be found on our partner's site, StuRents.com. StuRents pulls your star rating by using your HullSTARS property code, and you can manage the rest of your advert from their website. Your StuRents property adverts will also appear higher on searches if you're property is registered to HullSTARS. HullSTARS have Twitter and Facebook accounts which is updated on an adhoc basis with details of recent audit scores where landlords have given prior consent.

Once you've signed up and paid your fees, you'll receive access to your property page. You can update this with photographs and information, upload documentation and arrange for your audit inspection by calling the office.
